Qualification Overview

This qualification is aimed at learners already working or preparing to work in industry that is identified within the Company’s risk assessment of First Aid as being lower risk. Learners gaining this qualification will know that First Aid is the responsibility of everyone involved in the working environment. Its topics are regarded by the Health & Safety Executive as being important to maintaining good practice in the safe, prompt and effective treatment of injuries and ill health in the workplace.

Entry Guidance

There are no prerequisites for this qualification. It is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or numeracy or equivalent. Courses are to be no larger than 12 learners per Tutor. This qualification is approved for delivery to all age ranges.

Why has First Aid changed?

Following a review of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, the HSE concluded that the regulations should not change, but that within this framework there should be a new training regime for first aiders in the workplace.

What is EFAW?

EFAW stands for Emergency First Aid at Work. This 1-day course has been introduced to satisfy the needs of employers. The new Risk Assessment of First Aid Needs issued by the HSE clearly identifies this qualification. All successful students will be issued with an Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate which is valid for a period of 3 years, along with a wallet-sized plastic card detailing their qualifications.

Is there a requalification?

The qualification is valid for a period of 3 years after which time the Candidate will need to successfully retake the course to gain another 3 year certificate. Also, the HSE strongly recommends that Candidates undertake an annual refresher course.

What is the assessment process?

Candidates will be assessed by ongoing practical assessment by the Tutor. There is no requirement for independent assessment.
